Can you believe how fast February went by, because I can’t? I found myself questioning where the last month went, but I’m not gonna complain, because I’m excited about all that March holds. Not just because I’ll be watching lots of college basketball during March Madness, but because the next Young People Insight forum is coming up!
February was all about employment, but in March we will be discussing careers. Although careers could come under the same umbrella as employment, I think that it is actually quite a different subject with some more meaningful elements behind it.
In the Oxford Dictionary, a career is defined as: “an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life and with opportunities for progress”. This definition instantly raises questions about whether most of us as young people are actually pursuing a career, or just coasting from job to job without any chance of real progress. I remember Andrae, 24, saying at the first forum that they care about your next job but they don’t care about your career.
With many young people in dead-end jobs and positions that have no chance of progression, a career does not seem like a reality. Instead, youth are simply employed and earning money, without chances of climbing the career ladder or reaching their dreams and ambitions. I’m not saying that this is the case for everyone, but it is the case for a lot of young individuals, especially in a world where people are living longer and staying put in their job positions.
Then there is also the question of whether you were encouraged to pursue your dream career in the first place. Did you find yourself you were held back and talked out of it, particularly during the school years. Were you aware of the tools and skills that were needed to reach your dream? Did you even have an idea of your dream career, or did it seem out of reach?
Discuss some of these questions and more at the next Young People Insight forum on Tuesday 15th March. If you’re 16-25, come to Project B (1 Bell Hill, Croydon CR0 1FB) where we’ll be meeting from 6.30-8.30pm. Be ready to speak your mind and meet new people. Hope to see you there.
