In a time when we’re seeing that the same problems persist, in spite of things changing and moving forward, Shaniqua expresses some of these thoughts and feelings through poetry.
Liquid fury slides down cheeks
Outwardly venting, wondering
Will bureaucracy end?
Will false protection burn out?
Predictable phrases sing from pig’s mouths
Off-key melodies turning ears off rancid meat,
Offences not rectified
Ignoring shrieking cries,
Their torrid mess convenient chestnuts
Scooped and sold by owners
Living villainous roles
Benefitting from profit.
Corruption grown from gluttony
Gobbling tasty morsels, throwing crumbs to wards
Watching them wither and die,
Grossly infected with greed, no cure.
Consumption never stops.
Care never comes.
Extermination fires free.
Relief fails.
Healing fails.
Cycle starts again.
