What We Do

Young People Insight empowers the voices of young people, aged 16-26, through creativity, conversation and writing, providing them with opportunities to make their voices heard and meet new people in the process.

The Kickback

The Kickback takes place on the third Tuesday of the month, giving young people a space to speak their mind on a variety of topics, which have included Careers, Sex, Mental Health and Freedom of Speech.  Each topic is chosen by the young people themselves, ensuring that they are speaking about what effects them while in the room, rather than being spoken at or being spoken about.

The conversation is always dynamic and rich, provoking the minds of those present and helping them to develop a greater level of respect for each other.  Snacks are always on hand for a relaxed conversation.

“This is a platform that helps me to be more confident in speaking out, and actually talking to people and inspiring people.” – Andrae

Poetic Insight

Poetic Insight happens on the final Tuesday of the month, providing young people and young adults with a creative outlet to express themselve and speak their mind on a variety of topics.  Themes have included Relationships, Love & Hate, Violence and Black-ish.

“It’s so good to see that there’s a place young people can go to get something off their chest.  If there’s nothing like this, then we would keep our emotions in and express it in negative ways.  Poetry is therapy.” – Jamal

Poets and spoken word artists of all levels are always welcome and gently encouraged to take to the stage, providing them with the opportunity to develop confidence, public speaking skills and their stage presence.

Our future economy will thirst
For courage, creativity and communication
As tech takes over.
But if this is a drought, YPI is a dam.
Quenching the community
With discussion and expression.
Picture lines of children to the horizon
Waiting, as I once was, to find fearlessness
And embrace them
By supporting Shaniqua.
– Kris

Social Events

Social events are also put on throughout the year, giving young people the chance interact with others and expand their network by creating meaningful relationships in a fun, laid-back environment.  Previous events have included the games night, Come Out to Play, Get Together, and a party celebrating our third birthday.
